How is actuator speed controlled in machinery applications?

Depending on the controls provided, motor speed and screw speed can be either a fixed value (as with 60 Hz line voltage through a contactor starter) or a variable frequency value (as with a Variable Frequency Drive). This speed control can be either closed-loop or open-loop.
