The Importance of Bridge Span Locking Mechanisms

Bridge span lock systems play a critical role in ensuring the safety and stability of movable bridges, such as drawbridges and swing bridges. These systems are designed to lock the bridge spans in place, preventing unwanted movement due to traffic, wind, or other environmental factors. Additionally, these systems must be able to operate flawlessly, several times a day and are expected to last many, many years, often in harsh environments.

Without these systems, the structural integrity of the bridge could be compromised, leading to potential accidents and costly repairs. Therefore, robust span lock systems are essential to maintaining the overall safety and functionality of movable bridges.

Key Components of a Bridge Span Lock System

A bridge span lock system can be comprised of several critical components, including locking pins, lock bars, actuators, sensors, and control systems. The locking pins or lock bars are the primary elements that physically secure the bridge spans in place. RACO’s Modular Actuators, the MA Series and the EC Series, play a vital role in precise motion control of these bridge system components.

Likewise, various sensors and control systems work in tandem to monitor the status of the locks and ensure they are properly engaged or disengaged as required. These components must work seamlessly together to guarantee the bridge's stability and safety. RACO can also provide a dedicated control package, which will integrate into the overall bridge operating system.

Maintenance and Inspection of Span Lock Systems

Regular maintenance and inspection are vital to the longevity and reliability of any bridge span lock system. This includes routine checks of the locking pins, actuators, sensors, and control systems. Any signs of wear and tear, corrosion, or mechanical failure should be addressed promptly to prevent potential malfunctions.

Scheduled maintenance ensures that all components are functioning correctly and that the system can respond effectively to any operational demands. Proper documentation and record-keeping of maintenance activities also help in tracking the performance and identifying any recurring issues. RACO electric actuators are designed and built for durability and long life. Electric actuator maintenance is relatively low when compared to any pneumatic, hydraulic, or other mechanized design for the motion control of these locking systems.

RACO Heavy Duty Electric actuators have been an integral component to lock bar systems on movable bridges for many years

The MA actuator’s robust design allows it to withstand the harsh conditions of coastal maritime environments. Our actuators can be found on all different types of movable bridges (Bascule, Lift, Swing, etc.) and are commonly used to operate Tail Locks, End Seats, Span Locks, Rear Locks, Wedge Locks, etc.

RACO actuators are designed with special features to protect them against the most severe weather conditions: Exterior Marine Grade Epoxy Coating, Chrome Plated Thrust Tubes, Internal Anti-Corrosion Coating, Sealed joints, Flexible Rod Cover, Long-Life Lubrication, and Heavy Duty Front Seal with Ice Wiper.

Our virtually maintenance free electric actuators are also environmentally friendly as they only consume power when in operation. And since there is no hydraulic fluid inside of them, there is never any chance of anything leaking out and polluting the waterways below the bridge.

RACO’s Modular Actuator, MA Series, has maximum capabilities of 314,700 lbs thrust and standard stroke lengths up to 78 inches. The EC Series actuators, are a customized version of the Modular Actuator product line. Their design and construction provide for a “Made in America” package. Standard sizes range from 1000 lbs of force up to 50,000 lbs. with varying stroke lengths. Please consult RACO Engineers with your specification requirements.
