RACO Electric Actuators in the Timber Industry
From the Tree to the 2x4, RACO Electric Actuators Make the Process work
Throughout the process, timber and lumber must be moved precisely and adequately. Uncut and cut logs have to be moved to and through the saw mill, debarked, and cut optimally to get the most rough lumber from the log diameter. This means that there is a need to lift, push, and position multiple and individual logs throughout the process. Most times, heavy duty actuators are needed as the forces are substantial in this industry. The equipment will be operating in environments that are often dirty, wet, and exposed to extreme temperatures. Additionally saw dust covering any electrical piece of hardware acts as an insulator, not allowing heat to ventilate. RACO actuators are designed to handle these conditions.
Whether cutting at the saw mill or planning the wood, logs need to be moved, lifted, and positioned precisely all day long. RACO actuators are suited for these types of loads and forces, can achieve the speeds necessary to move product and survive in these extreme conditions present in the saw mill.

Electric Actuators are the superior solution over hydraulic systems in the Forestry and Timber Industry
Considering the size and weights of the rough product and even finished product, actuators have to be sized for forces able to handle the moving of these loads at production speeds. Add in the surrounding environment of saw dust and dirt, extreme temperatures, and space limitations, an all-electric actuator is preferred. RACO MA Series Linear Electric Actuators are capable of thrust forces up to 270,000 lbs, thus they have equal, if not better, available sizes for these types of applications, when compared to an all hydraulic or electro-hydraulic actuators.
Hydraulic actuator systems require many subcomponents to make the system work. Pumps, fluids, piping, seals, monitoring sensors, and valving components need dedicated space in the facility, typically near the operating area of the actual cylinder. This means that the dirty environment can take its toll on the system components over time. It also means valuable space at the machine is taken up by this necessary equipment and takes more effort to set up initially. The RACO all electric actuator system is a self-contained, easy to install system package. It is energy efficient, only consuming energy when moving the load.
Maintenance required for an electric linear actuator is very minimal. Periodic cleaning and inspection is the norm. Hydraulic systems need inspected often checking for leaks and must be cleaned often as there can be excessive heat buildup, which only can lead to failures. All and all, an electric actuator system will require less maintenance than the hydraulic actuator, run more trouble free, and last longer.
Benefits of using RACO Electric Actuators in this demanding Industry
RACO International has been applying electric actuators successfully for over 60+ years. Many of these units have lasted 20 years or more in service.
RACO Electric Linear Actuators are:
