Electric Actuator provides efficient Spreader Adjustment for container handling

The handling of containers in port crane facilities requires control at the highest level of precision. Loads need to be picked up safely, moved, and repositioned exactly. At the same time, these processes have to run as quickly as possible, as time is a crucial economical factor. The automation of processes helps increase efficiency while the electric actuator operates reliably and safely.

RACO is your systems provider for crane technology

Electric Actuators manufactured by RACO are ideally suited for many processes within the shipping container industry . They are also by far superior to hydraulic solutions, especially when it comes to lower maintenance, cost and energy efficiency concerns.
Typical areas of application include:

  • Adjustment of the headblock in order to position the crane gear above the container; “side shift actuator” & as a “micro motion actuator”
  • Alignment of the rope nip at the headblock above the spreader; “trim list actuator”
  • Locking of the trolley and crane gantry as a safety measure, especially during storms
  • Gear change of large cable winches for adjustable hoist speeds

High positioning and control accuracy

RACO actuators complete positioning and control tasks with a high degree of precision, even in extreme weather conditions. In regions by the sea, especially near salt water, the electric actuator meets the demanding requirements for corrosion protection and can withstand extreme wind and storm conditions. The electric actuator is much better suited for these applications than the hydraulic actuator system which has many system components, is prone to fluid leaks, and needs pumps and piping for the hydraulic fluid. The RACO electric actuator is a self contained, sealed linear drive system, easy to install, and built to last many years. Additionally, further electric actuator control features can help increase functional reliability and operational safety. At the same time, realizing soft starts is easily done through the use of our RACOmatic control system. Soft starts, and stops, ensure safer and better container handling by the crane.

RACO electric cylinders with RACOmatic- synchronization, automation and Soft Starts

The synchronized, controlled driving of several electric cylinders at uniform speed, in order to position cables at the headblock for example, or in the case of superimposed actuators of crane cross-beams or gantries, is a typical requirement for continuous and safe transport of containers. Equipping a RACO electric actuator with the RACOmatic® controller includes a variable frequency drive to control the motor rotational speed, sensor feedback as well as an optional brake system. The VFD allows for soft starts and/or deceleration in generator mode via the ramp functions. Our electromechanical actuators offer the programming of movement profiles and the reliable automation of processes.

Centralized control and remote maintenance

Electric cylinders that have been equipped with the intelligent actuating technology RACOmatic® can be controlled in a decentralized way; alternatively, they can be adapted to the main crane control by using a BUS interface. An individual, custom-tailored control concept, for driving several actuators synchronously for example, enables the signal exchange with the higher level Controls. It is possible to install the control components in a decentralized or centralized manner and check the operating status remotely.

Electromechanical drive concepts for crane systems by RACO are based on decades of experience – especially in the area of linear repositioning and material handling. This experience  with manufacturers and operators of harbor and crane facilities has been earned through many successful installations over the years. Please let us discuss your upcoming projects with you and potential improvements of your systems!
